AV Series designed for 12-, 24- and 42-volt systems...

STACKPOLE ELECTRONICS INC. FEATURES LINE OF SINGLE AND MULTI LAYER VARISTORS FOR THE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY

RALEIGH, N.C. (February 18, 2005) – Stackpole Electronics, Inc. recently introduced a broad line of leaded and SMD, single and multi-layer varistors designed specifically for the automotive industry. Designated the AV Series, these devices are designed for 12 volt, 24 volt and 42 volt automotive systems.

The chip-style, surface mount multi-layer AV Series is available in 0805 to 3225 case sizes, with single pulse peak current from 120 to 2000 Amps (8/20 µsec waveform) and single pulse transient energy spikes from 0.3 to 17 Joules (10/1000 µsec waveform). The surface mount version of the AV Series requires significantly less space and greater response times than typical silicon TVS diodes.

Regarding the use of the AV Series, Stackpole Product Engineering Manager, Kory Schroeder commented, “Multi-layer varistors, by nature, fit the requirements for automotive circuit protection because they are volumetrically efficient and fast reacting, yet still able to withstand large amounts of current and energy.”

Alternatively, the through hole style AV Series employs round and square-shaped designs to achieve superior transient energy absorption due to improved internal energy distribution. Depending upon WLD (load dump) requirements, the AV Series is available in single layer (for >50J) and multi-layer (<50J) components, in disc sizes from 6mm to 40mm. The AV Series offers single pulse peak current from 400 to 2000 Amps (8/20 µsec waveform) and single pulse transient energy spikes from 1.6 to 76 Joules (10/1000 µsec waveform). In comparison with typical round automotive disc varistors, the AV Series offers better electrical characteristics in a much smaller size.

With high maximum current capabilities, superior ratings for the automotive V Jump test and Load Dump Energy requirements – the SMD and through hole styles of the AV Series provide excellent bi-directional transient voltage protection for sensitive automotive electronics.

Applications for the AV Series’ include: antilock braking systems, direct ignition, airbag controls and windshield wiper motors in order to combat destructive voltage transients.

Pricing for the AV Series (SMD version) and AV Series (Through Hole Version) is $0.25 and $0.35 each respectively, in 1000 piece quantities.
