High voltage leaded product cost …simplifies design and reduces
MG Series increases voltage capability to 3500 volts in 1
and 2 watt leaded packages
RALEIGH, NC (February 8, 2006) – Resistor manufacturer Stackpole Electronics, Inc. has recently introduced the MG
series of high voltage metal glaze axial leaded resistors. The combination of small size and high voltage
/ high ohmic value capability allows designers to use a single component where
requirements previously dictated multiple parts or other more expensive
solutions.
The MG Series is constructed
using thick film metal glaze technology, and is offered in standard axial
leaded sizes of ¼ watt, ½ watt, 1 watt, and 2 watt packages. The strengths of this approach are the
excellent voltage characteristics and high ohmic capability along with
tolerances as good as 1% and temperature coefficients of 200 ppm. Thick film metal glaze provides an
electrically superior high voltage product at an inexpensive cost.
The MG series offers voltage
ratings of 1600V for the ¼ watt, 2000V for the ½ watt, and 3500 for the 1 and 2
watt sizes. These voltages are 2 to 3
times greater than the highest working voltage of standard or pulse rated
leaded resistors. A single MG resistor
can replace 2 or 3 other resistors, greatly reducing total manufacturing cost
while also improving the size and weight of the end product.
The MG series is designed
for a variety of uses such as voltage division, circuit protection, inrush
current limiting, and any other high impedance requirements. Applications would include many medical
applications such as EKG, ECG, and heart defibrillators. The MG series is also well suited for
industrial machinery and welding equipment, both of which regularly require
voltages higher than what a normal resistor can withstand. Power distribution in building and between
buildings can require protection circuitry that would dictate the use of a high
voltage resistor.
The MG series is available
in bulk, ammo pack, and tape and reel.
Typical pricing ranges from $0.04 to $0.20, and is dependent on the
power rating required, ohmic value and tolerance. Standard leadtime for the MG series is eight weeks.
