RALEIGH, NC (August 27, 2006) – Stackpole Electronics, Inc. though its strategic alliance with KEKO Varicon introduces the ZVY and AVY series SMD multilayer varistors designed for maximum operating temperatures up to 150 degrees C. Most multilayer varistors are only rated for operation up to 85C. Recently there have been an increasing number of varistors designed for operation up to 125C. However, automotive and industrial control market trends have driven the need for low voltage transient protection for temperatures above 125C. These two RoHS compliant products fulfill this emerging market trend.
The ZVY series is an SMD varistor and is an extension of the ZV series low voltage SMD multilayer varistors. It is available in sizes 0603, 0805, 1206, 1210, 1812, and 2220. Operating voltages from 3 to 170 Vdc and from 2 to 130 Vac. The ZVY features low capacitance for a fast response time of less than 2 nanoseconds. This product has a wide range of current and energy handling capabilities and can be customized for special current or energy handling as well as higher or lower capacitance. The ZVY is perfect for industrial and high temperature controls for ESD, switching, and inductive transient protection on circuit boards and IC’s.
The AVY series is an SMD varistor and is an extension of the AV series of automotive multilayer SMD varistors. This product is similar to the ZV series but designed specifically for the standard automotive voltages of 12V, 24V, and 42V. It is available in sizes 0805, 1206, 1210, 1812, 2220, and 3225 and is characterized for 5 minutes at Vjump and for 10X load dump energy (WLD), which are critical for the automotive industry. The AVY has low capacitance for fast response time of less than 2 nanoseconds. It has a broad range of current and energy handling capabilities and is customizable to fit any special requirements for current, energy, or capacitance. The AVY is an ideal choice for all automotive transient protection needs and because it uses less space than silicon TVS diodes offers more layout flexibility for the design engineer.
Kory Schroeder, Product Engineering Manager at Stackpole comments, “We have recently seen more an more requirements for transient voltage protection devices at temperatures above 125C, especially in Europe. In the US, the automotive industry has desired varistor protection at these elevated temperatures for some time, but was resigned to the fact that they simply weren’t possible until now.”
Pricing depends on size and voltage, but typically ranges from $0.15 to $0.50 in quantities of 10,000pcs and greater. Leadtimes are currently 8 to 10 weeks.

KEKO VARICON continues the tradition of ceramic electronic components started by Iskra Group 45 years ago. KEKO VARICON headquartered in Zuzemberk, Slovenia, has produced over-voltage protection devices for 10 years. Its name was derived from "VARistor" and "CONdensator", the old term for a capacitor. Today, KEKO VARICON is a leading supplier of over-voltage protection devices to many of the top electronics companies throughout the world. KEKO VARICON and SEI have formed a strategic alliance to jointly promote the sale of KEKO's products throughout North America.
